updates

I'm off to Edinburgh on Monday for a few days. This means I'll miss out on a meeting to do with Electric December, a project I'm undertaking for the library this year that has tenuous connections with my book art work (through narrative and animation). It's a chance to improve some existing skills and work on something new. A preliminary animation I've done with a 'librarian' character is working out okay. More work on this soon.

Anyway, I'll be passing on my draft storyboard to Andrew Cox, who'll be representing the library at this meeting while I'm in Edinburgh.

While I'm there, I'll be doing further research on Helen Douglas using the resources of the Scottish National Gallery Library at the Dean Gallery, having recently gotten in touch with Ann Simpson. I'm going to revisit the collection at the Edinburgh Central  Library, too.

Website stuff

Lately I've been developing a new version of my website, with nicer looking (though heavily JS-dependent) galleries and stuff. I've been hunting for a way to use RSS from my del.icious.tags to produce a live links page.Feed2JS would produce something of the like, using the Magpie PHP library, but not alphabetically sorted (I'd rather find a readymade script than get into the guts of it too much).

Something like ar.icio.us does this, but I'm not sure that the output would be flexible enough (nor does my server have PHP5).

The Feed2JS solution will work, albeit in a lumpen fashion. I'd prefer something a bit more, well, sorted

Research Methodology and Artistic Practice

My viva voce exam went fairly well, but pointed up one or two areas which I could do to develop more clearly. One of these was about how exactly making artwork might help me produce new knowledge. While I have a few ideas about this (outlined below) I want better ones. I want better theoretical integration/justification, and I want more/better practical strategies for producing and (scrutinising? analysing? synthesising-from?) the artwork. Hence this parking lot to throw a few ideas about. I'm also reading G. Sullivan's Art Practice as research, and I desperately want to get hold of Katy MacLeod's book, Thinking through art. Sullivan's book looks promising but is an inscrutable read for someone with my current shopping-list approach. However, it seems worth working with...
